More than any other musical tradition, the blues felt like home to the vocalist, who had already won praise for her jazz and world music work. When she saw the tectonic demographic shifts threatening Oakland’s longtime black residents, it seemed natural to write a song expressing her growing alarm. Odabi’s debut album “My Blue Soul” doesn’t focus on politics, but the opening track “Gentrification Blues” is a defiant anthem that kicks off with ecstatic drumming evoking the conflict at Lake Merritt, where the police were called last September to shut down a long-running weekly drum circle. Odabi has a word or two for people uncomfortable with Oaktown’s black culture, singing with hair-raising conviction, “I ain’t gonna let nobody run me out my town.”.
